“She reminded me of my granddaughter. I had to do something.”

That’s what Officer Jimmetta Brown said was a key motivator for investigating suspicious activity near her post inWashington D.C.—and a routine shift turned into a life-saving moment.

Stationed at the Secret Service Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Officer Brown and Officer Christopher Benjamin were performing standard surveillance when Officer Brown noticed something troubling: five men lingering suspiciously around the building, one on a bike, another gripping the neck of a fragile, frightened girl who looked no older than 15.

“There was something in my gutthat told me this wasn’t right,” said Officer Brown. “The way he held her… it didn’t sit well. I asked her if she was okay and told her to stand behind me.”

Officer Brown placed herself between the girl and the men—one of whom claimed, “She’s my girl.” But Brown didn’t believe him and stood her ground, giving the girl both protection and a path to safety.

Officer Benjamin quickly stepped outside to support the situation, demonstrating calm professionalism and backup that proved essential to de-escalating the threat. Their teamwork and fast response led to the safe removal of the minor and a call to authorities.

The Metropolitan Police Department later confirmed: Officer Brown’s instincts had prevented a sex trafficking sale. Their swift action and courageous presence made all the difference.

“I was just doing my job,” Brown said humbly. “I assessed the situation, and it didn’t look right. I’m glad I got to do something about it.”

Both officers received high praise commending their alertness and deep sense of duty from their Site Manager Officer Stanley Latimore. “Your quick thinking and vigilance played a crucial role in stopping a possible sex trafficking sale of a minor, ultimately leading to the safe rescue of that child… Your actions reflect great professionalism and a deep sense of responsibility.”

We are beyond proud of Officers Brown and Benjamin. Their bravery embodies the values we hold most dear—vigilance, service, and lōkahi: the harmony that comes from individuals rising to protect and uplift one another.

They did their job and, as a result, they changed a life.
