In just two days last week, three of our team members have been injured after slipping on ice. These incidents serve as an important reminder: winter safety is essential.
With cold temperatures expected to persist, icy conditions will continue to pose a risk across our sites. Let’s stay ahead of the hazards.
Top 5 Tips for Preventing Slips and Trips
1. Walk Like a Penguin
Yes, it sounds silly but it works. Take small, deliberate steps and keep your center of gravity over your front foot. Shuffle your feet slightly as you move to reduce the chance of slipping.
2. Stick to Cleared Paths
Always use designated walkways and cleared sidewalks. Avoid shortcuts over icy or untreated areas—even if it adds a minute or two to your route.
3. Stay Hands-Free
Keep your hands out of your pockets and at your sides for balance. If you’re carrying something, make sure it doesn’t block your view. And don’t text and walk—not worth the risk!
4. Gear Up Right
Winter boots or footwear with good tread can make a huge difference. If you’re unsure about your footwear, talk to your supervisor for recommendations.
5. Slow Down and Plan Ahead
Rushing is risky. Give yourself extra time to get to where you're going. Being just a few minutes early can help you stay safe, and on your feet.
Supervisors:
Please take a moment to remind your teams about these tips during your next safety huddle. Encourage everyone to be vigilant and help one another stay their feet and injury free.
